May, 2024: Pastoralist Child Foundation partnered with Drawing Dreams Initiative to host the Second Annual Menstrual Health & Hygiene Summit in Kiltamany Village, Samburu. May 28 commemorates Menstrual Hygiene Day – a day when we all pledge to stand in solidarity with women and girls worldwide, ensuring they have the resources and support they need to manage their periods safely and with dignity. The summit brought together partners, community members, educators, Samburu County government officials to show their support and engage in open conversations about menstruation, FGM, and child marriage. Poems, songs, spoken word, and art were also presented by the youth. Young and old came together to celebrate! It was inspiring to see so many elders eager to learn and break the taboos surrounding menstruation. Together, we’re taking steps towards a more informed and empowered society. No girls should be held back by their periods.
“The menstrual hygiene education we received from Pastoralist Child Foundation is very important because it has given me more confidence. I feel free all the time, even during menstruation. I don’t have to worry now that I know what to do and have the facilities to keep me comfortable,” said Naanyu.
